STERLING – Local lawmakers offered advice Wednesday to two community leadership programs on how best to lead – and to serve.

“It’s always about service,” freshman Legislator Rep. Tony McCombie, R-Savanna, told members of the Whiteside Area Career Center’s Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities class and the Sauk Valley Community Leadership Program.

The minute it’s about politics there’s a problem, she said.

McCombie, state Rep. Tom Demmer, R-Dixon, and Kate Jennings Gerber, district director for U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos, D-Moline, were among those attending a daylong leadership seminar sponsored by the college and by the Dixon, Rock Falls, and Sauk Valley chambers of commerce, and held at Sauk Valley Media.

The three talked about their journey as legislators and how they serve their districts.
