Rep. Demmer: No checks and balances in Democrats’ state budget

State Rep. Tom Demmer, R-Dixon, speaks during debate on the FY23 state budget, noting the highly partisan process and lack of checks and balances in the Democrats’ spending plan. Demmer points out that the new state budget increases spending by 10% at a time when revenues are declining by as much as 5% when you factor out the temporary, one-time injection of funds in the form of federal assistance to Illinois in COVID-19 relief.

Rep. Demmer also spoke during debate about how the Democrats’ budget implementation bill weakens legislative oversight of the Governor’s spending decisions. Rep. Demmer emphasizes the importance of transparency and the role of the Legislative Budget Oversight Commission.
